Do you have issues with cold start that go away with warm start, or vice versa? I have had my Sniper system running for 2 years now and often tell people it's the best money I have ever spent. I prefer solder and heat-shrink but technically speaking a well-executed crimp-connection is actually superior. Can I get clarity please? Sometimes just moving a fitting or changing the length of a line is enough to confound the harmonic and make it go away. Super helpful and knowledgeable. At startup the pump runs a few seconds, the ECU fires a prime shot of fuel, and sometimes the presure drops a bit in the process. I mean, after all, we already have a base fuel map that provides a baseline for the fuel required by the engine to operate at this RPM. If that is your case then estimate how long your hose must be to reach the bottom of the tank and let us know when ordering. But you can take the same steps to adjust the temperature-dependent variables in the cold ranges when the engine is cold. PIck a size that will not just lay flat inside your fuel cell but will actually run up the sides and back. Price Point: $$, EFI Systems based on Holley's world-class Dominator and HP ECU's. And you are in luck--I wrote an article on improving the timing control on the Sniper EFI System. Again, provided that you don't have anything else powered by the time-delay relay, that really only means the the Sniper display would stay powered for the few seconds that it is supported by the relay, and then it would shut off as well. Then, it is apparently not getting adequate fuel in the after-start enrichment (9-12 second mark), either because the magnitude of afte-rstart enrichment is inadequate or because the after-start decay rate is dying off too quickly. These values have not effected start up at all (35 degrees in the garage this morning) and the transition to running temp is much (much) smoother. It will come back up when the engine is running. If you have fuel pressure then you've got to dig deeper. You need to run resistor plugs and resistor, non-solid core wires. ), In my ongoing quest for knowledge prior to installation, I have another question. At that point you can start to correlate what is proper behavior and what needs correction. Holley EFI for Beginners // Where to Start // Sniper, Terminator X, HP/ DominatorHolley Efi Tutorials: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLN6EQoVPwAwHzmhEknk. Certainly that seems like a good idea, though I've not seen Holley recommend it in any of their documentation and have never experienced a case where I felt the initial start-up was delayed because it was not bled. Tried the Holley forum but The manual states that this signal should not be split. Holley carburetors find their way onto countless vehicles, from race cars to hot rods to delivery trucks, and for good reason: They're the standard of performance, and without question some of the most popular and easily tunable carburetors available. While continuing to observe the barrels, crank the engine. Thanks for the kind words, Tony. Chris is my go to for any issues that arise with my sniper. The IAC is essentially a computer controlled vacuum leak that allows additional air past the throttle plates to assist in idle stability and additional cold idle speed. Continues rich and then goes a bit lean. :-). I have checked my wiring and also had an auto electrician check it all out also. In my experience startup fuel tends to be too much. Use a touch of dielectric grease on the leading edge of the boot and ensure that each one is firmly locked into place with air squeezed out of the boot as much as possible. At the bottom you'll see AE vs TPS RoC Blanking. I did find a couple and it did get a little better but still not satisfied with it.What is the ISC hold position for and why is it set @ 30? Unfortunately, I know NOTHING about throttle stops. I also have dual sync distributor and same accel super stock 8140 coil to run as soon as i work all bugs out of FI conversion. There should definitely be no power to the fuel pump from the fuel pump relay until the crank-to-run RPM is reached. Full product line and accessories at excellent pricing. The Del City Time Delay Relay is pinned just like a normal relay. And the smell is just about gone. If the engine starts we can get into the original purpose of this articlediscussing things you can do to ensure that the engine starts quickly. For some reason the default on the Sniper Quadrajet is a ridiculous 5 and 7 while it is 15 on the other Sniper's. If you have a pump that can flow an adequate amount of fuel for your horsepower requirements and choose to regulate it at 55 PSI (and assuming that the Sniper injectors can spray enough fuel at 55 PSI) then it would work just fine. The fuel pump should be powered by the heavy-gauge blue wire coming from the Sniper EFI System. It starts fairly well. Is a tremendous volume of fuel sprayed in all barrels? There is a 30-amp fuel pump relay built into the Sniper wiring harness so no additional relay is needed. Why? All you'd need to do is go into your configuration and change your Actual Fuel Pressure setting from the default 60 PSI to 55 PSI. Is the Sniper EFI system rev-limiter capable. Can I run the pink ignition wire to the coil positive? The Ordering process was so easy and non-painful. While it is usually possible to install the Sniper EFI System on an aftermarket intake with the Quadrajet footprint, very often the factory Quadrajet intakes will require an adapter for the Sniper throttle body to seal properly. Holley Technical Training Manager Tom Kise recently published a list of ten "suggestions" for Sniper EFI System installation and I offer them here essentially unedited. We offer two potential solutions. Make sure the fuel pump is properly mounted and picking up fuel. That added fuel is called after-start enrichment. Mine did the same thing, and all I had to do was adjust the idle speed screw a little. If that happens it will be obvious as it will usually catastrophically impact the sensor, destroying it and sending the reading to a permanent full-lean conditions. Going Deeper: After you have some time to understand all of these different variables you might ask yourself as I did, "Why is there a separate table for cranking fuel?" Why? Probably 3-4 seconds, and rich after it does fire. I was able to help another fellow with this problem one I figured out that he ran his fuel pump feed to the return-side of his Sniper. Nice catch, Ken! FSM Manuals Jeep Manuals. Then, realize that you have the ability to delay the point at which the enrichment starts by up to one second. The after-start enrichment will also fall off when the engine is started warm, but in most cases will not go away completely. Stay after it--you'll make it happen! Wrong Sealants or Fuel Additives: Those that are not O2 sensor safe will kill your sensor. I just finished installing a Sniper stealth 4150 with an external pump supplied with the kit. Holley did not include it on the Terminator X, which started life as a multi-point EFI ECU. Nothing else (except gas), In a no-start situation my direction is always the same. Good point. Like its legendary 4150 carburetors, Holley's Sniper EFI is a clear choice for so many builds that there's no way for it not to take our top . multi-port EFI systems It needs to have a 80-100 micron pre-filter installed between the tank and the pump. Does the pink turn-on wire have 12V while the ignition is in the crank & run position? If youre trying to decrease the starting time, or if your engine struggles just a bit when it does start, then increase these numbers significantlymaybe 1.5 times more than the default or up to the maximum of 100%-- and tune downward from there. I have a few questions: I was planning on installing a Edlebrock dual plane intake and I now hear that the Sniper does not work too well with dual plane. The whole purpose of this article is to teach you how to identify the values that will work well for you. Both of these are easily corrected. sniper Installation If you're installing a Sniper EFI system and almost ready to crank it over for the first time, this is the video for you! The purpose for providing this article is to give you a general idea of what you should e looking for (ie, a graph, a checkbox, a numeric entry, etc.) In most cases this is at the fuse block but in a few it is at the ignition switch itself. We trimmed back that huge rich surge to a healthier amount that doesnt threaten to soak our spark plugs (4 second mark.) It seems to be going threw gas faster then it should. Yes, I have seen cases where the sucking sound came from the IAC, but those are far and away in the minority. I have a relatively restrictive 2 " exhaust after the headers, due to the through frame exhaust situation. Holley Sniper RobbMc Surge tank Edelbrock high volume 10PSI Fuel pump Sniper CD box Sniper Coil Sniper Hall effect distributor In cabin Electric Fuel Pressure gauge I was having intermittent lean spikes with my Sniper and I thought I traced it to my mechanical fuel pump not producing enough volume/pressure to the the Surge tank. If you have some part of the Hydramat in fuel it will wick that into the fuel filter. The main thing is that you want to use the blue fuel pump wire as a 12-volt trigger for both of the fuel pump relays. RPM Above Idle to Re-Enable Idle Control. You could simply drop 2.) This happens with some carburetors on dual planes as well. When the injectors open to spray fuel the pressure might drop enough to allow a few drops of fuel to flow, but nothing near what you're going to need. Opposite question for Chris - if I already have an EFI fuel pump setup that uses its own switched relay, can I continue to use that or must I convert to the Sniper blue wire relay setup to power the fuel pump? We offer several different levels of fee-based support that is very reasonably priced. Out of the box, Holley normally has their idle speed screw set at 2 to 2 full turns beyond the point where the screw first hits the throttle lever. From there it is a slam dunk. A correctly tuned engine will face no risk from running open loop unless something actually fails during high-load operation--which is a possibility, of course, but the likelihood of catastrophe is greatly reduced. If you have RF and or EMI issues you need to correct them. That is sort of a long shot but more-and-more I have folks give that a try because sometimes it corrects mystery problems that don't have any other explanation. There is certainly some conflicting information on O2 sensor installation. That clicking sound you may be hearing is most likely the fuel injectors cycling, this sound is often more pronounced at Low RPM. Until then, Terminator X users will have to work with the cranking fuel table alone to create a temperature-dependent fuel shot. Is that an expectable by-product of adding this relay? Will the height of the return line be an issue? If that works then try halving them again. Thanks. Ran well on carb and electronic ignition. Part throttle sucking sounds. Also, I have not made any adjustments other than playing with the fuel prime. Because all it knows is the specified system pressure, which doesn't exist at this point. Find a lower price anywhere and we'll beat it by 5%! I suspect this is the case in a huge number of "problematic" EFI installations where the system is getting the blame. Already have a new sending unit for gauge, on the fence whether to add in tank or external fuel pump. Tune the cranking fuel in the following locations: Using the Handheld Tuning > Advanced > Advanced Fuel > Cranking Fuel, Using the Software Fuel ICF (Fuel Injector Icon) > Startup Enrichment > Cranking Fuel. Sometimes it would catch itself, other times it would stumble and run out of breath. Latest Articles. This is called the fuel prime shot. I want to run an under the carb type throttle stop. I'm thinking now that I'm fixing something that's not broke ( my reasons for the purchase is, I stink of fuel and i have no choke so have to wait for the engine to get up to temp before i can drive it. If your O2 sensor is pegged lean, then replace it. Capability Range: Moderate You need a new fuel pump. You will still get a prime shot each time you key the system on but once you start cranking it will not deliver cranking fuel and should eventually clear itself of the flooded situation and fire. I have been looking at all efi units and I keep coming back to the Sniper. Runs, then dies. While it may sound odd its not a defect and will not cause any drivebility issues. Bradley Iger. Directly to the BATTERY!!! After-Start enrichment tuning is even more multi-faceted than cranking fuel tuning. Bill Tichenor. You see that the AFR trace is ar below the target AFR (pink trace.) Holley Sniper First Start. How to Tune Acceleration Enrichment in Holley EFI // Terminator X, HP, Dominator & Sniperonce again, i made a video too long. I bet this fixes your problem. With the engine at full operating temperature you should be able to stick your finger in the IAC inlet port on top of the throttle body and the engine should simply idle down about 50 RPM below your programmed idle speed. It connects the Sniper switched power to a very "dirty" power source. Have a look at those. Not bad but maybe we can improve that. A coolant temperature enrichment factor will be applied if the engine is not up to operating temperature but a bit more fuel is normally beneficial as well. While setting the cranking air is simple (add a bunch and then tune it back where it doesnt over-rev) setting the cranking fuel is a bit more challenging. (You DO have a fuel pressure gauge installed, right? Ill check the coil and see if anything else is attached. HP ECU's. Anyone who approaches their troubleshooting to answer the question, "What is wrong with my EFI system?" Not some generic pump as some have speculated. Holley knows how to do math! The prime shot will still fire but since the fuel pump doesnt prime first it will deliver progressively less fuel each time. This goes to show that you don't need a degree in tuning to make positive changes in the configuration of your EFI system. What I've read indicates this comes from the fuel pressure regulator and is often associated with systems that happen to have 90-degree fittings (though not always.) You should then have at least 18-24 of pipe after the sensor. Go Gators. Now were getting there. Beyond that you're going to have to get Holley tech support involved. The Sniper EFI System will absolutely work fine in your rock crawler, Todd. Capability Range: Moderate 1964 Chevy Nova, 383 Stroker, AFR 210 Heads, Ford 9inch w/TrueTrac/3.90 Gears, Powerglide Transmission. I'm worried that the engine will stall at idle. If not then stop and buy one now. Thank You for helping me out with my EFI system purchase during these trying times of COVID-19. my screen recording software i. Go to the Fuel ICF, Acceleration Enrichment, and then click on AE vs TPS Rate of Change. Question is, do I just plug what was the return at the throttle body? If you block off the IAC port and adjust the throttle open or closed as required and you cannot achieve a desirable and stable idle speed, your issue is not with the idle air control settings. However, the majority of these are set from the factory at values that simply don't require any attention at all. This is extremely unreliable afrer warm. What do I need to do to rectify this issue? I have the 12-1800 dual holley pump also. If I go to ignition switch it is the same wire just 2 away. Most current pump fuels boil around 130 degrees. Getting the engine running was never a problem. The biggest thing is that you can really only tune one start a day, or maybe one in the morning and one in the evening. Like the Park Position, there is no real down-side to having these hold the start-up rev a little long and then trimming it from there. In most cases you just hit the key at that point and it's happy dance time. I've been running the super sniper 1250 on my 6.2 ls for several months now and am still fighting cranking issues. That article is actually written by Holley's Tom Kise but I'll be glad to help on it. Super helpful. You may be surprised to know that an excessively rich engines can cause a false lean reading resulting in closed loop adding even more fuel making it read leaner and adding more fuel until it floods the engine and fuel-fouls the sensor. I have it disconnected to flush any debris out.Thank you. Maybe Holley will add Fuel Prime Multiplier to Terminator X later. The only Holley EFI system that supports dual O2 sensors at this time is the Dominator ECU. The xflow instructions state it needs 60 psi. You're not running your EFI system without a gauge are you? Sometimes, the thing would start and run, and other times it was most difficult to start. That amount of air is determined by the IAC Park Position. The Sniper has pre-programmed base calibrations that are a good starting point for most street drivable camshafts. Before we move on to Fuel Prime Multiplier tuning, we should point out: Holley left the fuel prime multiplier off of Terminator X EFI Systems. Would appreciate your input. This is a huge improvement over what we got initially. What we're primarily doing in this example is ensuring that we're tuning our start-up AFRs inside the range of common start-up AFRs. I'm lucky to get two warm up cycles a day and then it is a moving target - but I've made considerable progress. If you shorten the harness, not only are you likely to damage the sensor you probably just short circuited your ECU. Sure enough the pink wire DID NOT have voltage when cranking. Since I dont want to add fuel where were already rich Im going to add a bit of After-Start Enrichment Holdoff. If I let it prime twice, it starts much faster. It just can't work properly. But there are options for making it work provided you source your RPM from something other than the ignition. Price Point: $$$. Stay up to date with the latest releases, events, promotions and more. Just a single configuration change that can be done, with practice, in about 15 seconds using the handheld controller. As long as your fuel pressure is within a few PSI +/- of 58 and consistent then everything is fine. Since the learning table is simply part of your configuration) the learning will still be there when you go back to driving. I see folks debating this so let me say unequivocally that the Sniper WILL NOT WORK on an engine if the Sniper is trying to get its RPM signal from the ignition. Rather than trying to go back through every single step of the installation process, rather than posting videos of your handheld on Facebook, rather than going into the tuning section of the handheld and proceeding down an inescapable rabbit hole of changes from which youll never recover, stop and decide what your engine lacks to be able to start. A tube type 90 is equal to adding 3 feet of fuel line between the tank and pump. Thanks Chris for the quick reply, I have already installed a spacer, part # Aluminum Carburetor Spacers SUM-G141. idles good, runs amazing. and set 3.) Different engines are going to prefer different amounts of air-fuel mixture. 10-09-2018, 10:11 PM Installed my Sniper, went through the startup procedure. If you're installing a Sniper EFI system and almost ready to crank it over for the first time, this is the video for you! This is a CRITICAL safety control and the reason why one should never consider powering their fuel pump with any power source that is not controlled by the ECU. Yes, ensure the Sniper EFI switched +12V pink wire is powered in the "Run". Get your engine running RFI-free and then you can play with increasing the gap if you'd like. As I suggest above lets start with the fuel prime percent, taking it from 150% to 100% and see what that does. (Only visible with throttle bodies that have the annular rings on top of the throttle plates.). Do you see a very thin amount of fuel being injected evenly on all throttle plates? This is a bit tricky. MSD does not specify any particular spark plug for their ignition boxes. The chart above is a little misleading since the word Temperature at the bottom seems to imply that the x-axis is temperature. Is there enough cable to get to the battery? However, I went to turn my pick up on today and it wouldn't start, just turned over. But weve also introduced some leanness from 4-10 seconds. I am in the middle of plumbing my new sniper throttle body system. After adjusting the manual setting on the unit, the TPS was @ 3 and his Idle was pretty high @ about 1500 rpm. Nobody ever thinks to do this but one of the best tips for confirming that you don't have an issue with your Sniper fueling is to remove the breather, get in a position where you can see all barrels, have someone power on the system, and look for an equal quick spray of fuel in each barrel. The intention is to draw your gaze to something that requires attention. All of these values are configurable. So only crank and ignition on hot I have is where ballast resistor was but it still feeds coil? Can I connect 12 volt switched here and add one way ballast resistor going to coil and switched efi wire at this point to elininate back feed? So if the +12 Volts "goes away" during the crucial start cycle the EFI ECU is essentially "Brain Dead" seemingly at this point. Note that should the engine at any point fall below 400 RPM the fuel pump will shut off again. But never ever forget there is a second learning going on--your own. Any suggestions ? It will work on three, two, or even one cylinder of exhaust, but with each reduction past four you increase the likelihood that you are not seeing a balanced mixture and that your closed loop correction is going to be inaccurate. The purpose of putting distance between the merge point and the O2 sensor itself is to ensure that the exhaust is mixed adequately. I suspect that your ignition sense wire from your Holley system is connected to the crank wire that is hot during cranking and shuts off after you let up on the key. Yes, I have fuel pressure. First, don't get too worked up about the flashing yellow and red values. The Sniper EFI throttle-body drops in place of your carburetor. Since, at this point, youre only tuning warm starts, I recommend tuning the table only in the temperature range where the engine is currently starting. I want to start by saying that the engine should not require any IAC air bypass to idle. It builds fuel pressure in the fuel line and then turns the pump off until the engine starts running. MSD recommends non resistor plugs. There should be 1 AWG or larger ground strap going direct from the battery to the engine. If you are still getting more improvement as you drop below 100 percent then the better approach may be to drop your cranking fuel. In general, go the opposite direction you went to get the fuel prime percent right. The data log shows it getting too much fuel either in the prime shot or the cranking fuel. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.Gary. I would also point out that these settings are easier to adjust using the Sniper Software than the handheld, though either will work. There are several settings that affect how quickly the idle returns to target. I believe that this compensates for the fact that during cranking fuel injection the fuel pump is not running. You may have an injector connector that has come loose.A final note that I can't emphasize enough. Incorrect connections will result in excessive resistance. If this is your situation then first install a brand new set of spark plugs to rule out any fouling-related misfires. Thanks. Maybe I am missing something here. Cheers Darren. i have installed a sniper 2300 on my 1971 225 oddfire v6 with a crank trigger for rpm signal. Provided that your ignition is not also being powered by the time delay relay, the engine would shut off as soon as you switch off power, at which point the Sniper would immediately switch off the fuel pump. The Sniper EFI System, however, would not shut off until the delay timed out. Idle and cruise can be tuned leaner with "seat of the pants" feel. . You can find that here. Your engine will be dependent on cranking fuel entirely. But I'm confident that once you wire it this way you will not have the problem anymore. MAIN POWER AND GROUND need to go to the battery. Be sure to watch the video embedded at the link above. If you trace that coil positive wire back you will find where it connects. Gary. Chris, this is going to be an easy one. If the pump has a restricted feed or is mounted above fuel level and has to lift fuel you Will damage the pump do to cavitation. We do see a massive rich dip in the AFR as soon as engine starts. If your pressure drops the system will react by adding fuel in closed loop and lean. late-model V8 engine swaps. Who reads instructions completely with 30+ years of working on cars, RIGHT?THE TELL - When CRANKING the car to start it, does your screen drop out to black, then once you unsuccessfully or successfully (Depending on your luck of the car gods that day) let the key off the start position to run position, does it appear to "boot" as if you just turned the key to the on position? Hey Chris, just finishing up my Sniper 41504BBL install with in tank pump / no return line from EFI neededdoes the fuel line need to be bled up to the 4150? Pin 30: To Battery If it is more than about 5 PSI one way or the other, or if it changes under different operating conditions, then you should look into that. and go to restart warm, it catches starts for a flick of a second, drops to a stall, or sometimes will catch its self and start. I tried the external inline pump while installing the 2300 in my 78 cj-5. also i returned from test drive exhaust seemed clean at idle at first then seemed to go rich, any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, I have long tube hooker super comp headers the only place i could mount the sensor is 10" past the end of the collector , one of the post said i could go into tune up program and change the poramater from 3 to 1 is the correct? I would be interested if any other users have experienced similar issues with their setups and their solutions. Try cranking immediately upon key-on--before it has a chance to prime. Only thing I have done since last Wednesday was add Holley EFI gauges. Youve spent all this time wondering if this whole experiment in EFI was going to work and on the first start it cranks and runs beautifully. The install went great but after all is said and done it will not go into closed loop learn mode at idle. Hello Chris. Pinched or Burnt O2 sensor Wiring: Keep it high, tight, and safe. Let me know what works for you! shut truck off. Thanks. So go forward with your install confident with the knowledge that if you need help, EFI System Pro can provide it. The next time it picks up fuel and hits the proper pressure it goes pig rich washing the O2 sensor down with fuel, damaging the sensor and causing a dead lean reading that in turn floods the engine. Unfortunately, the only way to do this is with the Sniper Software. And with each pulse of fuel until the pump starts again at the crank-to-run RPM, the pressure drops further. Chevy 350, rocker cam, mild cam. Can I get ready made tunes?Even with this problem it is by far the best fuel system I have owned. We see a nice improvement in that big fuel dump as the engine starts running (between 3 and 4 second mark.) This Mr. Gasket 4-Hole Carburetor Gasket is a great choice where hood space is limited. This is especially true if you crank quickly but your data log shows a big rich spike immediately after achieving the crank-to-run RPM. Nor can I really recommend that you split it as I have. Hard to answer. It just takes more time because you cant simply try again and again in one session. Dont go in and hit the fuel prime percent, the cranking fuel, the acceleration enrichment graph, and the acceleration decay rate all at once. I'm glad that worked for you! Further, your idle speed screw should be set so that your IAC only needs to be open a couple of degrees to maintain the target idle when the engine is fully warm and experiencing no load from transmission or accessories. (Dont forget and then later wonder why it wont start!). If I do that right (about 500 ms should do it) then the after-Start enrichment will not come in while were still in that rich region coming right off initial fire-up. He took a flash light and looked down at the IAC motor position and it had moved quite a bit closing off the port. Now I had to try this and of course my results were not so lucky.
